Sunsets and Sombreros: Destination Wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

When former professional footballer Tony Lochhead met Nicole at a bar in Long Beach, California, in October 2014, he knew he had met his soulmate. After he proposed at his favourite beach in New Zealand, where he’s from, it was obvious that they’d set their wedding on a beach, too. The couple knew instinctively that Cabo San Lucas, Mexico was the place where they would take their vows in front of friends and family, to celebrate the place they first confessed their love for one another. Nicole and Tony picked the Cape, a Thompson Hotel, as their venue and invited 65 guests down for a long weekend of boat cruises, beach parties, and of course, wedding celebrations.

Captured by photography studio Forged in the North, the elegant and pinterest-worthy wedding was chic and modern, combined with the neutral tones and richness of Cabo San Lucas.  The couple kept their invitation suite elevated to match the Cape’s chic design. Their welcome note to guests said “Hola!” and the weekend’s events were printed on paper that looked like a colourful cloth to encapsulate the essence of Mexico in a subtle and sophisticated manner. The bride with a successful background in fashion went dress shopping with her mother and bridesmaids and picked a dreamy geometric print lace gown by Vera Wang with long sleeves, a very low back, and a plunging neckline. Before the ceremony, Nicole and Tony did a first look on the hotel balcony before taking in the view of the peninsula. The ceremony took place on an outside patio with views of the Pacific Ocean.

An altar covered in greenery and flowers served as a central point while the aisle was lined with black lanterns and black candles. Nicole and Tony exchanged vows they’d written themselves before taking the reception to the hotel’s rooftop at sunset to soak in the Baja landscapes. Again, sticking to a modern aesthetic, the bride filled the space with uncovered wooden tables and black metal chairs. Tables were dressed in blush-coloured runner, black tableware, black flatware, and flower arrangements of different heights and shapes. The three single-tiered cakes were all different flavour combos, from caramel cake with salted caramel filling to a banana cake with coconut filling, and chocolate cake with vanilla filling. Black cake tiers from Tina Frey and fresh cut flowers in nude hues completed the dessert table. The picture-perfect wedding ended with the friends and family aboard a private cruiser floating across the iconic El Arch and the rocky backdrops of Cabo. The wedding planner Signature Mexico incorporated the best of Cabo’s scenic and gastronomical offerings to allow the attendees to immerse in the Baja magic.
