All You Need To Know About Modern Wedding Cakes

When we think about weddings from mid-2020 to 2021, the word that comes to mind is ‘unconventional.’ It’s time to forget the mindset of weddings we used to know before the pandemic and be open to fresh new ideas. Modern couples are going for a style that reflects their personalities and the overall theme of the wedding. Think personal patterns, metallic accents, artsy adornments, marble frosting.

We sat down with Daphne Prananto, a talented cake designer & Founder of KAIA Cakes & Co. from Indonesia to understand what goes behind creating mouthwatering wedding cakes and the trending styles in 2021 modern cakes.

KAIA Cakes & Co. started in 2016 based on a dream and passion. Graduated from a Design school, Daphne artistically combined her parent’s bakery with her design skills and the result was something that not only just delights the mouth, but pleasures eyes and ultimately reach hearts.

Abstract Textured Base

The texture effect takes on the ethereal look to the next level. It gives it a more soft and delicate effect. This specific trend involves carving patterns into the icing (like embossments!) or using physical icing to create shapes. In a lot of ways, your baker assumes the role of the sculptor to make these unique textures happen. This is more of a romantic ethereal wedding look combined with soft muted colors and a full-on floral arrangement.

Asymmetrical

The perception of wedding cakes has shifted. The conventional wedding cake or even any type of tiered cake is stacked aligned to the center. But nowadays, asymmetrical stacked cakes on the right wedding theme are really interesting. Instead of playing the part of being a ceremonial piece, it became quite the centerpiece art of the party.

Colorful Floral Arrangements

Weddings used to be identical with whites, soft subtle colors and more monochromatic. In recent weddings, we are seeing a lot of bold choices in wedding themes and also color combinations we’ve never thought of before. Nowadays there are so many options for dyed color flowers like dyed phalaenopsis, dyed tulips, dyed peonies as well for muted color flowers such as brownie color, charcoal and so on. Also, a lot of preserved plantation options with various colors to die for.

Organic Ornaments

The last two years have been all about dried flowers and rustic themes. Organic ornaments are a new breed of rustic but more to a subtle side, it’s a blend of modern and rustic. With an application of movements and more abstract elements, a contemporary feel can be achieved. We can be more explorative to shape and colors.

Modern Monochromatic Pattern

Modern aesthetics are really in these days. With a monochromatic decorative touch, we may think of an effortless and minimalistic design, but these days it’s more towards a contemporary style. We can tend to be more explorative and creative. A lot of material/media explorations and experimentation have been done making geometrical patterns both – positive and negative, but we have to keep it modern by doing it in repetition and keeping it in monochromatic colors. There has to be a unity that ties all the design together.

“To be honest, the way we treat the cake is as if it’s a piece of art, which I love because I come from an art background. It’s been a vision of mine since the start and I’m happy to be able to do what I’m passionate about.

We are loving the recent trends to use more colorful choices of flowers for weddings. A lot goes into creating the wedding cakes. First, we try to get to know the clients, about their preference and style. Then we try to understand the whole theme of the wedding so we can suggest a suitable cake for that style. We give options and discuss the design for the wedding cake and lastly, we will draw out a sketch to visualize the idea.” Shares Daphne.
