Insider News: Amangyun, Shanghai

The architectural and ecological treasure trove will soon open its doors to the world.

The brand-new Amangyun resort, in its final stages of completion, in a tranquil sanctuary in the outskirts of Shanghai is the latest masterpiece of modern day hospitality. The fourth Aman property in China, is by far the hospitality giant’s most ambitious project- which involved restoring the historic dwellings and the sacred camphor forest, that were transported from the village of Fuzhou. The new peaceful setting of these historic marvels is at a comfortable proximity from the vibrant city life of Shanghai; in some ways as a metaphor for where old and new, natural and manmade, coexist in perfect harmony.

Antique Villa

A Fuzhou native, Mr. Ma Dadong was determined to prevent the destruction the natural and historic fragments of Chinese history, which led him to plan a herculean relocation of 50 Ming- and Qing-dynasty villas and ultimately ten thousand of the trees – some dating back a millennium – all the way to Shanghai. After a decade long labour of love, the property is soon approaching its final touches.

The luxury retreat features ornate carvings and intricate detailing of family histories that date back centuries. The expansive woodlands can be viewed from one of the 24 Club suites, and guests can immerse themselves in Chinese traditions such as the tea ceremony and learn ancient calligraphy. The hotel also features six dining venues, including the Chinese Restaurant, the All Day Dining Pavilion and a 200-seat Banquet Hall ideal for destination weddings, along with a an array of café and alfresco dining options; all of which offer locally sourced delicacies.
