Amato Couture Takes a Poetic Stand For Spring 2018

UAE based designer Furne One Amato can easily be classified as one of the region’s most avant garde artists. Known for his fantastical collections that take inspiration from all things natural and supernatural, the Philippines-born designer has created a pack of A-list loyalists around the world including superstars such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé

This year, for spring 2018, he brought back his edgy and ethereal soft tulles, encrusted with intricate beadwork and ruffles to the grand finale night of Fashion Forward, Dubai. The thought-provoking inspiration behind his newest collection is enlightening. He talks to us about his new collection and gives us an insight into the life of a jet-setting designer for the rich and famous.

What message did you want to convey through the creation of this collection?

On the surface, I wanted to highlight the reality of how humanity has abused our seas and oceans. But underneath it all, I was inspired by a certain piece by the 13th century poet Rumi –  ‘You have seen my descent, now watch my rising’. In this life, we’re all floating in the ocean. We can rise to the surface and sometimes sink to the deepest depths. It is up to us to choose to either float along wherever the waves take us or fight the current.

Why is it important that this message be understood?

I think everyone has to open not only their eyes but also their minds to what’s going on in the world.

What have you done this time, that is unique and distinguishable from your last collections?

This season I wanted to show purity in the clothes. I decided to keep the styling to a minimal. The models were ethereal, light and clean. The dresses were also embroidered in delicate patterns, embellished with clear crystals and the colors were on the softer tones as well.

How much of your own personality transpires into the collection?

I always put a bit of myself in each collection that I do. I get emotionally attached to the dresses that I create that sometimes I don’t even want to sell them.

When handling couture clients, what is their biggest concern and what is the process like?

I find the entire creative process very fulfilling as it is exciting. From conceptualizing ideas and sketching the design, to the sewing and finishing, it still amazes me how a simple imagination can come to life. Being able to create a dress that people appreciate the most rewarding experience for any designer. Moreover, what matters is that you create something that speaks to your audience and make them see your vision.

What do women want from their couturier?

Like the city of Dubai, the women have also adapted to the styles and trends of Europe and America. The country itself has become a melting pot of different cultures and fresh ideas which makes the Dubai fashion even more interesting.

What keeps you inspired?

I am inspired by many things. From movies to music, places I’ve traveled to and the people I meet. Inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places. All you have to do is open not only your eyes, but also your mind.

Who is the AMATO woman you design for?

Cate Blanchett. She really is the ideal Amato woman. She has style and substance. Cate dares to wear anything out of the ordinary but still remains elegant and graceful. She isn’t afraid to look different from the other celebrities – which I think is what makes her an exquisite muse.

What is your fondest memory with a client?

When I first dressed Katy Perry, her stylist contacted me and asked me to design outfits for Katy’s California Dream Tour. It was quite an overwhelming experience. After her, the rest of the celebrities followed. Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, Rita Ora and the list goes on and on. It also helps to make connections in the industry such as stylists, editors and photographers. I also got to dress Katy Perry again this year, which is always an amazing experience. She’s just so beautiful inside and out.
