About Us

Julie Deffense is recognized as the leading luxury cake designer in Portugal as well as the USA. Born in Boston, Julie’s fine arts education brought her to Lisbon for design work. Formerly an art director, and then an editorial design director of her own magazines, it was the love of Portuguese culture and sweets which reignited her lifelong passion for designing extraordinary cakes.

Julie transitioned from editorial work to become an expert in elaborate cake artistry and studied with renowned cake designers and experts at the Wilton School of Cake Decorating and Confectionary Art in Illinois, various schools in the UK, Portugal and Spain.

By 2010, Julie established a reputation in Portugal for creating beautiful and delicious creations, opened novel (“pop-up”) cake shops, taught popular decorating workshops, and launched a luxury cake business.

In 2017, Julie expanded her business from Portugal to the United States. As demand for her exquisitely designed and personalized wedding cakes has grown significantly, she is based seasonally in the key wedding destinations of Sarasota, Florida and Cascais, Portugal.

Julie is also the author of 5 cookbooks on luxury wedding cakes, baking, party food and salads!

Do you customise wedding cake?

Yes, we offer two types of services: One-of-a-kind luxury wedding cakes; and JD Collection cakes, a series of 8 semi-customizable cake designs.

Do you allow cake tasting?

Yes, based on availability.

Do you charge for cake tasting?

Yes - our cake tasting consultation is usually $100 and includes a 6" sampler cake. The couple chooses two cake flavours that are paired with a buttercream/filling. They meet directly with Julie and discuss all the details for their cake while tasting the cake, then they take the cake home with them to enjoy again later with friends and family.

Do you provide cake toppers and cake stands?

We specialise in sugar flowers so the toppers we provide are sugar flower toppers only, we do not provide any type of "written/lettered" toppers. We have a selection of cake stands that may be used for the day of the wedding.

Other services offered

We have a selection of beautiful, custom made cake table linens for rent for the day of the wedding. We also have an antique family heirloom sword that is available for use (Portugal only) on the day if the couple so desires.

Pricing Package

Julie Deffense's one-of-a-kind luxury wedding cakes start at $1250 and can go to $30,000+ depending on the design, scale and complexity of each cake. Julie Deffense's JD Collection cakes start at $495.

White ruffle cake

I never actually met Julie in person, I’d seen her work via my wedding planner being in the Uk and getting married in Portugal was Harder then we thought however Susie had assured me she’d found the best cake lady in the algarve & she couldn’t be more right. The wedding cake was just beautiful not only did it look fantastic it really did taste fantastic too & I shared any left over the next day at our bbq, I wanted more!! I know it’s cliché to say this about a wedding cake but if you see the cake you’ll be able to see the hard work and the detail Julie put into it, I really feel you took on board exactly what we wanted. We also had a dessert table done for the guest and it was all gone, delish! Again keeping in with the theme of our wedding and the vibe we had, without it being too much (nothing worse then wasted sweets & treats!) so thankyou lovely for everything as it really did add to our special day!
