Tips For A Perfect Wedding Toast

Often an overlooked part of the wedding festivities, the toast can create feelings of laughter and warm nostalgia or create an awkwardness that your guests won’t soon forget. The perfect speech is an art. It would be best if you thought about what makes the bride and groom special. Write down your own passion draft first. Put down memories that stand out and why you love the couple. Looks like a task? Well, don’t fret, because here are a few tips to make things go much smoother.

Brevity Is The Key

Keep it concise and don’t drag much. Whether it’s due to the giver being nervous or having an exuberant personality, some toasts drone on, which isn’t ideal. Keep it short, sweet and simple. Aim for around two to three minutes. Honest speeches from the heart are the ones that leave a lasting impression.

Humor It Up But Keep Inside Jokes Minimum

People giving toasts at weddings should remember that it is a time of celebration, and while it should be fun, the toast should not be a roast. Wedding guests often bear witness to overdone, awkward speeches filled with innuendo and inside jokes that fall flat. Stick with fond memories, compliments, and heartfelt sentiments. The more you treat it as an open-mic night, the less happy everyone involved is going to be.

Bring Out The Connection

Talk about the meaningful connection you share with the bride/groom and how this relationship is going to evolve more with the partner in the picture. Talk confidently and practice beforehand if required. The key here is to gain everyone’s attention to know how much they mean to you.  You can include a metaphor to describe the couple’s love and the start of their life together.

Use Classic Quotes

Whether you want to impart some wisdom or inspire the couple’s journey of love, quotes take the speech to the next level. Use quotes from famous icons of love or great minds that have lived a life dedicated to love and we are sure you will find some good ones out there.

Here are our picks:

“I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self-respect. And it’s these things I’d believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn’t all she should be. I love her and it is the beginning of everything.” —F. Scott Fitzgerald

“I’ve come here with no expectations, only to profess, now that I am at liberty to do so, that my heart is, and always will be, yours.” —Sense and Sensibility

“People do fall in love. People do belong to each other because that’s the only chance that anyone’s got for true happiness.” —Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Raise A Glass But Don’t Drink Much

The last thing you want to do is give a wedding speech full of slurs and mispronounced words. Being one drink in works for some people, but being more than one drink in is never a good idea. At that moment when you’re like, ‘You know what I need? Another couple of shots.’ That is never what you need. Save the celebratory drinks for the toast at the end of your speech?
